OKLAHOMA CITY GUIDE
What to do right now if a pipe bursts in Oklahoma City
If water is spreading, the order matters more than the diagnosis. People first, then the shutoff you can actually reach, then the call. This is a checklist, not a repair manual.
People, then power
A burst pipe feels like a plumbing problem, and it is, but the first minute is about who is standing in the water. Move people and pets to a dry room. If the water is sewage, keep them out of that room entirely and do not track it through the house on shoes. Sewage in a living space is an urgent call, not a mop project. If you smell gas, or you hear a hiss you cannot explain near a gas appliance, leave the house and follow the gas utility. Do not stay to find the water shutoff while you are also standing in a gas smell.
Electricity is the other hazard that does not wait for a plumber. Water on a floor near outlets, a cord, a washer, or the panel is a shock risk. Do not stand in the water and operate a breaker, a vacuum, or a phone charger that is plugged in down low. If you can reach a dry path to the panel and you know which breaker feeds the wet area, killing that circuit is reasonable. If the panel itself is wet, or you would have to wade to it, leave the power question to someone who can do it safely. The emergency plumber page is the companion to this list: it sorts what can wait until morning from what cannot.
The shutoff you can reach
Once people are clear, stop the water if you can do it without climbing into a hazard. In slab houses around Oklahoma City, the two places homeowners usually find a main shutoff are a valve on a garage wall and the valve at the meter in the front yard. Close the one you can reach. Turn it clockwise, firmly, without a cheater bar that can snap the stem. If the handle moves and the spray slows, you have bought time. Open a faucet on an upper floor afterward so a little pressure bleeds off the open pipe. That does not repair anything. It keeps the line from staying charged while you call.
The meter box is not a place to stand in lightning, in a flooded hole, or after a storm has bent the yoke. If the valve is buried, broken, or will not turn, stop. Say that on the phone. Do not dig beside the meter. Gas lines often share that general area of the yard, and a shovel is how a water emergency becomes a gas emergency. If a hose bib on the outside wall is the thing that split, look for a separate stop inside the garage or in an access panel before you declare the whole house unusable. Many bib failures can be isolated. Many cannot, if the split is on the house side of that stop. Describe which one you closed.
If the valve will not move
A stuck shutoff is information, not a failure of nerve. Forcing it with pliers until the handle spins uselessly leaves the next person with no valve at all. Note that it would not turn, and whether any water still reaches a faucet. If every faucet is already dry, the city side or a closed valve upstream may already have done the job. If faucets still run and the burst is still spraying, you need someone who can stop it at the meter or at the street, and you should say the indoor valve failed.
Do not open walls to "get to the pipe" while water is still moving. A burst in a ceiling or a chase will keep feeding the stain until the supply is off. Catch what you can in buckets under the drip, move furniture and photos, and leave the demolition for after the flow stops. If the ceiling is sagging with water, stay out from under that spot. Wet drywall and plaster fall. That is a reason to keep the room clear, not a reason to poke the bulge with a broom while you are standing under it.
What the weather just did
Oklahoma City winters are mild until they are not. Ice and a hard freeze split hose bibs, above-ground irrigation equipment, and lines left in an unheated garage more often than they split a pipe buried in a heated slab. If you woke up to a bib spraying after a freeze, say freeze, and say whether hoses were still attached. The week-before habits that prevent that are on the freeze preparation page. The morning-after version, including a dark street and an electric heater that is only cold because the power is out, is on the storm and ice page.
Wind is a different sentence. After a tornado or straight-line winds, the supply line where it enters a slab, and the meter itself, are the parts that get pulled. Look from a safe distance. If the meter yoke is bent, the ground is washed out, or the house is not safe to enter, this checklist stops. People and the utility come first. Do not turn valves in a damaged pit, and do not go back inside a compromised house to photograph a closer crop of the pipe. Wide shots from a safe spot are enough.
The call, and what to write down
When you reach a plumber, lead with the facts that change the truck: where the water is, whether it is clean supply water or sewage, whether a shutoff is closed, whether the house is slab-on-grade, and which city the house is actually in. Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Midwest City, Yukon, and Norman are not one permit desk and not one utility story. Ask about the after-hours diagnostic fee before you approve work. A fee you have not heard is not a detail to discover on the invoice.
While you wait, write down the time you closed the valve, what you shut off, and what you left alone. Photograph the meter, the burst if you can see it from a dry place, and the path the water took. Skip heroic close-ups. If the floors are dry and the meter is still moving after everything is off, you may be in a different problem than a burst you can see. That quiet-house test, and why it is not a reason to cut concrete yourself, is the slab leak guide. Use the notes page on this site if you want a short summary to read aloud. Nothing on that form is sent to us.
After the flow stops, resist the urge to turn the main back on "just to check" every few minutes. Each test re-wets the house. One controlled check, with someone watching the damaged spot, is enough. If the ceiling, the electrical gear, or the gas appliances got wet, say so. Those are separate trades, and a plumbing repair does not dry a wall or certify a panel. Keep the receipts and the photos together. Whether any of it is an insurance conversation depends on your policy, which this page does not interpret.

Questions during a burst
What should I do first if a pipe bursts in my Oklahoma City house?
Get people out of the water, and do not use electrical devices while you are standing in it. Then close the shutoff you can reach safely. If you smell gas, leave and follow the gas utility instead of hunting for a valve.
Where do I shut the water off in a slab house?
Look on a garage wall and, if it is safe, in the front-yard meter box. Do not stand in a flooded hole or dig around a gas line to find the water valve. If the valve will not turn, say that when you call.
Should I turn the power off?
If water is near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, treat electricity as the hazard and get people clear. Do not stand in water and flip breakers. If you are not sure the panel is safe to touch, leave it.
A hose bib split in the freeze. Is that the same as a burst inside?
It is urgent if you cannot stop the flow, and it is often a smaller job if a nearby valve closes. Hose bibs and lines in unheated garages are the parts that split in an ice event more often than pipes buried in a heated slab.
What do I tell the plumber in the first sentence?
Where the water is, whether you closed a shutoff, whether the house is slab-on-grade, which city in the metro you are in, and whether the water is supply water or sewage. Ask about the after-hours diagnostic fee before you approve work.
